BC Conservatives Rise Amid BC United’s Floundering and NDP Failures

COWICHAN VALLEY, September 2024 — A political wind is sweeping across British Columbia, and it’s not the kind that brings more of the same old tired rhetoric from the NDP-Liberal coalition. No, this is a fresh breeze, one that seems to be blowing favorably for the BC Conservatives as they surge ahead in the polls and attract disillusioned voters from across the spectrum.

Kevin Falcon, leader of the now-floundering BC United Party, recently dropped a political bombshell by announcing that his party would suspend its campaign, leaving many candidates scrambling like hens without a roost. But here’s where it gets interesting—the Conservatives, led by John Rustad, are not just picking up the pieces; they’re paving the way for what looks increasingly like a victory lap come October.

Falcon’s Fumble: A Lesson in How Not to Run a Campaign

Kevin Falcon’s decision to withdraw BC United from the upcoming election has been likened to a “gut punch” by Jon Coleman, the party’s candidate for Cowichan Valley, who apparently found out about this strategic maneuver from the same sources as the rest of us—social media and news headlines. One might say that Falcon’s leadership skills are as stable as a three-legged stool on a windy day.

Coleman, caught in the crossfire, hasn’t decided whether to run as an independent or perhaps even join the Conservatives—a natural fit, if we’re being honest. “I appreciate so many people in the Cowichan Valley reaching out and telling me that I’m a stronger candidate than John Koury, the Conservative Party’s candidate for the riding,” Coleman stated, sounding a bit like a kid who wasn’t picked first for the dodgeball team.

And let’s not forget Herb Haldane, another BC United hopeful, who learned of his party’s demise from an NDP MLA. Talk about irony. Haldane, ever the bipartisan guy (or perhaps just a man without a political home), isn’t quite ready to jump ship, but he’s not happy about being left in the dark. “Rustad is not my guy,” he admitted, which is fair enough; no one likes finding out they’ve been left off the guest list.

BC Conservatives: Stepping Up While Others Step Back

Meanwhile, John Rustad and the BC Conservatives are strategically gaining ground. Rustad welcomed the opportunity, saying that aligning with BC United was a necessary step to prevent another four years of the NDP’s so-called leadership. “When common sense, free-enterprise British Columbians are united, we get great things done,” Rustad asserted. And he has a point—common sense seems to be in short supply on the other side of the aisle.

With BC United candidates now running as independents or being lured into the Conservative camp, Rustad and his team are positioned to consolidate the centre-right vote and mount a serious challenge to the NDP. And why not? The Conservatives have managed to tap into the growing dissatisfaction with David Eby’s NDP, which seems more focused on ideological posturing than on tackling real issues like housing, cost of living, and public safety.

Local residents are taking notice. “The Conservatives have been the only party standing up for what matters,” said Susan Bradley, a long-time Cowichan Valley resident. “John Rustad put his name forward when others were still waffling. That’s the kind of leadership we need—someone willing to do what it takes, no matter the challenge.”

David Henderson, a small business owner from Vancouver Island, echoed this sentiment. “The NDP has been all talk, no action, and don’t even get me started on BC United. Rustad and the Conservatives are the only ones who’ve shown they’re ready to fight for us. They had my vote from the start, and they’ll have it in October.”

Failures of the NDP and Liberals: The Voters Speak

It’s no secret that the BC NDP has been struggling in the polls. Recent surveys show the Conservatives leading for the first time in British Columbia, with 39% of decided voters supporting them, ahead of the NDP’s 36%. And with BC United out of the way, the path to victory seems even clearer.

David Eby’s NDP government has been criticized for its handling of numerous issues, from botched housing initiatives to controversial stances on energy policies. Even voters who may have leaned left in the past are now reconsidering their options, given the government’s inability to deliver on key promises. The BC Liberals (rebranded as BC United) haven’t fared any better, with their new name confusing more voters than it inspired—a classic case of putting lipstick on a pig.

A Grounded, Grassroots Approach: The Conservatives’ Winning Formula

In stark contrast to the faltering BC United and the ideologically driven NDP, the Conservatives have focused on concrete, actionable goals that resonate with the average British Columbian. John Koury, the Conservative candidate for Cowichan Valley, noted that the movement for change is palpable. “We’ve knocked on nearly 7,000 doors since February. It’s clear people want change,” Koury observed, pointing out the consistent support he and his team have garnered from residents eager for a fresh approach.

As one Cowichan Valley resident put it, “The Conservatives have shown they’re serious about making a difference. It’s refreshing to see a party that doesn’t just talk but takes action. I’m fully behind Rustad and his team because they’re the ones who’ve stepped up when it counts.”

What’s Next? A Brighter Future for BC Conservatives

With Falcon’s BC United now a political orphanage for disenfranchised candidates, the real momentum is with the BC Conservatives. They’ve got the wind at their backs, the right ideas, and most importantly, a unified team ready to address the pressing needs of the province. As Rustad and his growing band of supporters prepare for the upcoming election, one thing is clear: The Conservatives are not just running—they’re running to win.

The days of BC United’s flailing are over, and the era of a confident, clear-eyed conservative vision for British Columbia is dawning. It’s about time for a government that doesn’t just talk about “doing what’s best for BC,” but actually knows what that means.

And to those still hanging on to the hope of BC United’s comeback, well, good luck with that. As they say in politics: when the ship starts sinking, the smartest rats swim to the winning side.
