LtE: Gratitude for Capturing Our Family’s Journey Through History

Dear WWIND,

I am writing to express my deepest gratitude for your beautifully written rendition of my family’s time living abroad in the Orient along with their 5 long years in a Shanghai prison camp (Edition 12 wwind.ca). Oddly enough, my family rarely spoke of this difficult period of their lives. Having the book In the Clutch of Circumstance for reference and a newspaper story from when my grandmother was interviewed by the local Victoria paper in 1965 allows me a vivid snapshot of their lives. I still have a few of their belongings that they carted across the waters with them, a beautiful hand-carved cedar chest that was bestowed to my grandmother by her parents for her 18th birthday along with an authentic mahjong tile set. Life often challenges us in many ways, my family embraced each and every step of their journey. My grandmother passed away in 1999 predeceased by my mother, Vivien in 1982.

Many thanks, Dopson family
