So, We Were Right All Along: The Truth About Social Media Bias

Conservatives and independent thinkers have been warning about Big Tech’s bias for years. As gatekeepers, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and similar platforms filtered information, shaped narratives, and suppressed dissent under the pretence of “fact-checking” and “fighting misinformation.” The response? Mockery, outright bans, shadow bans, and a chorus of disdainful “you’re paranoid.”

However, in a startling turn of events that resembles a Black Mirror episode, Mark Zuckerberg himself is now revealing the truth. What conservatives have been saying for years—that social media platforms were used as weapons to impose ideological narratives, silence dissenting voices, and gaslight half the population into submission—was essentially confirmed by Zuckerberg in a recent interview on The Joe Rogan Experience.

Zuckerberg’s Long-Delayed Disclosure

“We were under tremendous institutional pressure to censor content on the basis of ideology.”

Here, Zuckerberg doesn’t hold back. He presented a timeline that is both illuminating and upsetting. It all started with Brexit and the 2016 election, two occasions that rocked the world’s establishment to its foundation. The answer? a comprehensive campaign against “misinformation,” which has come to mean “anything the elite doesn’t like.”

He acknowledges that Facebook’s initial focus was on empowering individuals, stating, “The whole point of social media is basically giving people the ability to share what they want.” That sounds fantastic, doesn’t it? However, the political pressure soon followed, and that mission was abruptly abandoned. According to Zuckerberg, “In 2016, we gave too much deference to folks in the media who claimed misinformation was the only reason Trump got elected.”

“We don’t trust the people to think for themselves,” the media said, and Facebook rolled over.

COVID-19 Steroid Censorship

The really chilling part comes when Zuckerberg describes the COVID years. He describes how Facebook was actively pressured by the Biden administration to take down discussions about the negative effects of vaccines. Zuckerberg acknowledged, “They pushed us super hard to take down things that were, honestly, true.”

Let’s say that again. The censorship of factual information was demanded by the government. In his own words, Zuckerberg called this “ridiculous,” but Facebook continued to comply for years. He related an instance in which the administration requested the removal of a meme that made fun of upcoming vaccine class-action lawsuits. Even though his team declined, anyone should be incensed that this conversation even took place.

The Fact-Check Conundrum

“The fact-checkers were biased… not just in their rulings, but in what they chose to check in the first place.”

The cherished fact-checkers, ah. Zuckerberg’s dismantling of these purported truth-seers is almost poetic. Facebook’s system, which was intended to flag obvious lies like “The Earth is flat,” was taken over by political operatives, he acknowledges. The fact-checkers began picking apart opinions and calling them “false” in order to further their own agendas, rather than focusing on outright lies.

Zuckerberg draws attention to how this damaged public confidence. “The public didn’t think the fact-checkers were objective. And they were correct. He continues by praising Twitter’s Community Notes system as an excellent substitute, where user-generated context enhances content rather than stifling it. Consider a social media feature that promotes discussion rather than stifles it.

Making the populace polarized

Zuckerberg acknowledged the terrible effects of bias in addition to its existence. He said, “We polarized half the population,” alluding to the harm caused by suppressing contentious but valid discussions.

Consider the story of Hunter Biden’s laptop. Zuckerberg previously disclosed that Facebook was pressured to suppress it by the FBI due to nebulous concerns regarding “Russian disinformation.” Millions of votes could have been influenced by that story, which has now been verified as true. With the statement, “Trust in media has fallen off a cliff, and we were part of the reason,” Zuckerberg now appears to regret his complicity.

A Practical Turn?

“I’ve had a change of heart.”

Zuckerberg, of course, maintains that his newfound passion for free speech isn’t political. He claims that the decision to change Facebook’s policies was long overdue and had nothing to do with Trump’s imminent comeback. However, isn’t the timing a bit too ideal?

Let’s be honest. Big Tech is aware of the situation. The pendulum is turning back in the direction of responsibility. Zuckerberg’s change was motivated more by self-preservation than by moral clarity. He even said, “I’ve learned from the past decade… but crazy things might happen again.”

Meaning: “We screwed up, but please don’t come for us when the Republicans take charge.”

Proof of the Right

For those who have been warning for years about the bias on social media, Zuckerberg’s admission is a welcome confirmation. Do you recall when anyone who questioned the vaccine narrative was banned? Or scolded for implying that Big Tech conspired with the state? They weren’t conspiracy theorists, to be sure. In the coal mine, they were canaries.

The bottom line is as follows. Social media censorship over the last ten years wasn’t an accident. It was a concerted attempt to change culture, gaslight the populace, and suppress dissent. Many people already knew that the game was rigged and the deck was stacked, and Zuckerberg’s admissions confirm this.

What Comes Next?

Zuckerberg’s reforms, which include relying on Community Notes, changing algorithms, and abandoning fact-checkers, are positive moves. However, they are merely steps. A few policy changes won’t repair the harm done to our democracy and culture.

Transparency is what we require. Get the books open. Allow the public to observe the decision-making process. Stop allowing governments to dictate what can and cannot be said, for the sake of free speech.

An Urgent Appeal

Conservatives were ridiculed for years for calling out Big Tech’s bias. The truth is now directly in front of everyone. It’s time to demand justice, hold platforms responsible, and fight for a digital public square where all opinions are heard.

Zuckerberg’s admission serves as a warning as well as a confirmation. It feels like the tide is turning for the first time in years, but the battle for free speech is far from over. And that’s worth celebrating, at the very least.
