When MLAs get in on the cancel culture trend

Dear Sonia, Regarding the letter (attached) that was sent to Mayor Alto, I have to say, I’m a little confused at your stance.

Having attended both days as a videographer I can say without any reservation not a whisper of what you infer occurred, nor did I suspect would occur leading up to the event (with the exception of media outlets like CHEK and Times Colonist, and letters like yours, planting that seed into the public consciousness).

I suspect you and many others have been fed a line and you all bit…hook line and sinker and are now being used as foot soldiers by those who wish to divide us as a society and as a result control us as a society.

If you had attended you would have learned quite quickly what it was all about…freedom of speech. If it’s your stance to quell such a thing, and were successful, you would be succeeding in silencing yourself in the future. In the words of Hon. Brian Peckford, the last living co-author of our Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, he says “I may not agree with what you have to say, but I will defend with my life, your right to say it”.

Thank you Mayor Alto for not capitulating to such pressure. You did the right thing. For anyone in media reading this, please uphold journalistic integrity and stop being part of the problem…you’re not doing yourself, your children and future generations any favours.

Regards, Dan Peruzzo

“Her Worship Marianne Alto Mayor, City of Victoria MAlto@victoria.ca ,

Mayor Alto, I write to share my concern with the use of the Victoria Conference Centre, a City of Victoria-owned and operated venue, for an upcoming conference which is designed to spread disinformation and hate. Organizers and speakers at the ‘We Unify’ conference, scheduled to be held at the Victoria  Conference Centre on 22 and 23 June have been banned from multiple countries for hate speech, and have a history of spouting hateful rhetoric that dehumanizes transgender and other  2SLGBTQIA+ people. Allowing this event to take place at a city-run venue implies City of  Victoria support of this event, in direct contradiction of the “Declaration of Ongoing Solidarity with Gender-Diverse Residents of Victoria,” adopted on November 9th, 2023. This declaration  states that the Victoria City Council “condemns any and all anti-SOGI mobilizations that seek to  undermine the rights and dignity of gender-diverse individuals and their families within our city”  and “calls upon community leaders to denounce attacks on transgender and gender-diverse  individuals.” Transgender individuals already face significant challenges, including discrimination, violence,  and lack of access to essential services. Allowing speakers who embrace and promote hate speech against them only serves to perpetuate stigma and harm, further marginalizing an already vulnerable population. I believe that the Victoria Conference Centre needs to uphold the inherent rights of all  Canadians to live free from persecution and violence, and that as a city, we must take a strong stance against hosting those who promote hate in any of its forms. I urge you to consider the impact this event being hosted by the City of Victoria Conference Centre will have on Victoria’s  2SLGBTQIA+ community and to please uphold the commitment made in the 2023 Declaration that was adopted by council.

Yours sincerely, Sonia Furstenau Leader, BC Green Party”
