Dear WWIND,
Oh, PLEASE help me understand where these councillors come from!
ISLAND MUNICIPALITIES LOOK TO GO ELECTRIC WITH THEIR FLEET, INCLUDING GARBAGE AND DUMP TRUCKS – Times Colonist article by Michael John Lo, July 23/24
Has Esquimalt council not learned from the one EV they now have, a “2012 Nissan Leaf”? For god’s sake! The first lesson is that as batteries age and are used, they DETERIORATE. The second lesson is that as they age, they DETERIORATE in performance, meaning they require more charging time while providing less mileage. Thirdly, at a certain point, the battery becomes inefficient and must be replaced. Finally, at that point, a decision must be made whether it’s worth the enormous cost to replace the battery or to throw the EV away.
The electric 2012 Nissan Leaf in their possession is the best example of the fallacy of electric vehicles. The life expectancy of a 2012 Nissan Leaf battery is 10 years. The cost of the battery is $16,000, that is, of course, if you can find one. The cost to replace the battery is $5,000. So, in other words, the running costs for a 10-year period = $21,000. (That amount of money can buy a lot of fuel.)
The old Leaf in Esquimalt’s possession is either long overdue for a battery replacement or the battery has been replaced and will be due again in 2032. Hey, folks, in other words, in only 8 years. In the year 2032, any manager that decides to do a second battery change on this “vintage” Nissan Leaf should be FIRED. But now for the real problem of how to dispose of it?
Sell it? Good luck, as no one in their right mind will buy a well-used EV in need of a battery replacement. Junk it? What wrecker would want a piece of junk with a toxic battery they must dispose of somehow in order to salvage a few used parts that no one would want. Hey councillors, multiply the foregoing cost and headaches of an EV Nissan Leaf to that of humongous batteries and having to junk large trucks.
Yup, all of this as the “climate change scare ship” HCMS FRAUD, piloted by former Green Party Leader, Captain Andrew Weaver, abandons the sinking ship, now that the truth about climate change is slowly emerging. CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels has NOTHING to do with the changing climate. Good old Mother Nature is in control of that business. Yaaahhh, got it councillors? Probably not.
